Bottom line? Breastfeeding problems can be overcome. Very few women cannot breastfeed. I hope that I do not come across as a breastfeeding “pusher” because I’m really not. I had quite a difficult time breastfeeding my first baby (I lasted for five months) and the two other times were easy and wonderful time. You never know how it’s going to turn out – I have the same breasts (!) but different babies!
I sincerely believe that you have to find what works best for you. The decision to breastfeed or not is a personal one that only you can make. If you are having breastfeeding problems, I can totally understand why you would want to quit. I certainly did! But I once had someone say something to me that made quite an impact: She said, “Are you willing to give your baby 40 days?” Just 40 days. Can you do this for your baby? I tell you what, if your breastfeeding problems can be overcome, they will be overcome within the first 40 days. If your breastfeeding problems are such that you and your baby simply cannot continue with it, then you will also know that after trying for 40 days.
By all means, get help! But by all means, do not blame yourself for breastfeeding problems.
I had a lot of breastfeeding problems with Hana. I got blocked ducts 13 times (that was horrible!) and was quite miserable. Not only was I struggling with my breastfeeding problems, but I was also terribly sleep deprived and frankly, not coping very well. I wanted so much to be able to overcome my breastfeeding problems, so I went to my doctor, I talked to other moms, I even went to a special breastfeeding clinic. Eventually, I quit at 5 months and put Hana on formula. What a difference that made! My life completely changed almost overnight.
Extensive research has shown that breast milk offers the absolute perfect nutrition for your baby as well as significant immunological benefits as well. In addition, consider the following facts:
- Breastfed babies have increased protection against diabetes, allergies and meningitis.
- Breastmilk also helps protect babies from ear infections, diarrhea, and colds and may help protect babies from S.I.D.S.
- The composition of breastmilk changes as your baby grows and her nutritional needs change.
- When breastfed babies do get sick, studies show that they require hospitalization less frequently than formula-fed babies
- Breastfeeding is more convenient, especially when you’re on the go. There are no bottles to sterilize and no formula to refrigerate.
- Breastfeeding can save a family about $1200 a year.
- Women who breastfeed have a lesser chance of ovarian cancer and breast cancer. In fact, breast cancer affects women who have not breastfeed to such a great extent that it used to be called “the nuns’ disease”.
- Breastfeeding can also help you lose weight. Breastfeeding exclusively every day is the equivalent to riding a bicycle uphill for an hour a day or swimming 100 lengths in a pool.
Choosing to breastfeed is a choice a mother makes after carefully considering all the available information.
The newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breast, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three. – Dr. Grantly Dick-Read
I experienced quite a few breastfeeding problems when I was nursing Hana (my first baby) and I got so much conflicting advice, it was very confusing. I didn’t know who or what to believe. What I learned was this: breastfeeding problems do not go away on their own. You have to reach out and get help.
For myself, overcoming breastfeeding problems and being able to experience the contentment and pleasure that breastfeeding brings, makes me feel very personally satisfied.
